What to Expect at Your First Court Date in North Carolina

A plain-English walk-through of arrival, dress code, and what actually happens when your name is called.

Plan to arrive at the courthouse at least 30 minutes early. You'll go through security — leave pocket knives and similar items in your car.

Dress like you're going to a job interview. Avoid hats, shorts, and clothing with prominent logos. Silence your phone before entering the courtroom.

When court starts, a clerk or judge will go through a calendar of cases. Your case may be called early, late, or held for later in the day. Wait quietly until your name is called.

If you have an attorney, you do not have to speak unless the judge asks you a direct question. If you don't yet have an attorney, you may be offered the chance to come back with one — don't be afraid to ask.
